о мероприятии

Dear colleagues!
It has become a tradition for Russian and foreign theorists and practitioners of management to take part in annual International conferences on the History of Management Thought and Businesses (HMT&B), held by the Lomonosov Moscow State University in order to discuss current historical and managerial management issues.

Since 1996, 23 conferences have been held on the following topics:

  • "Development of Management Concepts" (1996),
  • "Enterprise Restructuring in Transitional Economy: Theory and Practice" (1998),
  • "Government and Business" (2000),
  • "Development of Personnel Management” (2001),
  • "Problems of Measurement in the Management" (2002, 2003),
  • "Scientific Managerial Concepts vs. Real Management" (2004, 2005),
  • "The Russian Model of Management: Past, Present and Future" (2008),
  • "National Models of Management" (2009)
  • "Business Models: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" (2010),
  • “Social Responsibility of Business and Management Ethics” (2011),
  • “Business and Management Ethics: Comparative Analyses of National Models” (2012).
  • “From Stratagems to Strategies, From Strategic Planning to Strategic Thinking and Enlightenment” (2013)
  • "Problems of training managers: yesterday-today-tomorrow" (2014)
  • “National Models of Training Managers” (2015)
  • “Scenario-Based Management and Leaderships” (2016)
  • “Scenario-Based Management: origins, problems, solutions” (2017)
  • “Managerial work and the role of managers: past, present, future” (2018)
  • “Management and roles of managers: yesterday-today-tomorrow” (2019)
  • «Measurability in the Management of Social Objects: yesterday, today, tomorrow" (2021)
  • «Development of views on regional economic management in the countries of the world: history and modernity» (2022)
  • “Teachings on the management of organizations: past, present, problems” (2023).

On June 27-29, 2024, the Faculty of Economics of Moscow State University plans to hold the next, already 24th International conference on the History of Management Thought and Business. It has been a long time since we discussed the issues that were raised in 2008–2009. We are talking about national aspects of governance. More than 15 years have passed since then, and the time has come to take stock of what has been achieved, evaluate and define the tasks of historical and management research, the subject of which was and continues to be the Russian economic management model. That is why the topic proposed for the 24th conference is “Models of economic management in Russia: creators, their creations, clash of views.”  We would like to hear answers to the questions: “What factors gave rise to management concepts and models?”, “Who and thanks to what was the “hero” of scientific and practical creations?” and “What methodological problems are we facing today related to the three components of Historical and Management Research (HMR):

  • the History of Managerial Thought (HMT),
  • the History of Management (HM) and
  • the Historiography of Historical and Managerial Research (HHMR)?"

 The Conference will be held online and offline on June 27-29, June, 2024

As always, the objects of historical and management research and our conferences will be various kinds of materials and/or documents - monographs, articles, collections of conference proceedings and legislative acts, letters, memoirs, diaries, archival documents, etc. In the case of our conference, these are materials that present points of view, ideas, views, thoughts, concepts, theories, scientific schools, reflecting the emergence, development, struggle and change of ideas and scientific and applied views on the management of the Russian economy in different specific historical periods. The time period is not limited - from “Foreign News” and manuscripts of representatives of Ancient Russia to treatises of our contemporaries.

Moreover, the views and ideas themselves can relate both to the management of the Russian economy as a whole, and to the management of its individual aspects and elements of the economy - economics, politics, demography, legislation, socio-cultural relations, science, technology, international relations of the country, as well as individual industries (agriculture, bee keeping, trade, etc.), organizations and functionalities of organizations (personnel, marketing, finance, R&D, purchasing, production, sales, etc.).

It is also obvious that the subjects of economic management in Russia in different specific historical periods were (as management actors) the state and its institutions of all forms of government, public organizations, the church, the army, and representatives of the private economy.

Hence, a few questions that we expect answers to at the upcoming HMT&B-2024 conference:

  1. When and in connection with what did Russian business management and management thought in Russia originate?
  2. What is the “legacy” and “heritage” in the field of science and practice of business management in Russia?
  3. What are the origins and sources of Russian managerial thought: notes of foreigners, chronicles, codes of legal acts, princely charters, “Domostroi”, etc.?
  4. What are the factors and reasons for changes in management systems for households, organizations and businesses in Russia in different specific historical periods?
  5. What are the factors of the origin, formation and development of HMT in Russia?
  6. How did the clash of interests of well-known creators of Russian economic management models arise and manifest themselves, for example, such as:
    1. Yury Krizhanich and Afanasy Ordin-Nashchokin (17th century);
    2. Ivan Pososhkov and the ideologists of “enlightened absolutism” (18th century);
    3. Alexander V. Suvorov and Emperor Pavel I (19th century);;
    4. Lavrenty Beria and Nikolay Voznesensky (20th century);
  7. How and Why did the ideas and concepts of systemic (elemental) and integrated (aspect) approaches in managing the Russian economy arise and develop?
  8. How were the aspect characteristics of economic management in Russia manifested and taken into account (economic, political, legal, demographic, etc.)?
  9. Why and How have views on staffing the processes of economic management in Russia changed?
  10. What was the “engine” of management and management thought in Russia – the real economy or the logic and intuition of the creator of ideas?
  11. How to teach historical and management disciplines in the context of economic management in Russia now?
  12. What problems are currently facing by HM, HMT and HHMR researchers?
