Dear colleagues!

It has already become a tradition for Russian and foreign theorists and experts of management to assemble in June within the precincts of the MSU at the International Conferences on History of Management Thought and Business to discuss topical problems of management.

During these years conferences on the following issues were conducted: “The development of management conceptions: yesterday, today, tomorrow” (1996), “Restructuring of enterprises in transitional economy: theory and practice” (1998), “State and enterprise: yesterday, today, tomorrow” (2000), “Development of management personnel: history, the present, the future” (2001), “Problems of measurements in organization management: history, the present, the future” (2002, 2003), “Scientific concepts and real management” (2004).

The participants of the latest conference unanimously supported the idea to discuss the same problem of interrelations between scientific concepts and real management at the VIII Conference. That is why the same problems that were discussed at the VII Conference are submitted to the VIII Conference, namely: Have we learnt during longstanding history of “Management as activity” to observe this activity, systematize these observations and recognize the regularities of management, carry out successful management? Why does “Management as a science” have practically no scientific laws while the subject of this science – “management as activity” – has a unique possibility of reproduction that many of the sciences can only dream of? What or who influences minds of management gurus, creators of ideas and concepts of management – their own thoughts and talent of foresight or requirements of real management? Why do views and concepts of management change so frequently? What is the role of consultants in development of the science and practice of management? What is the role of Educational Organizations in training of experts who transform ideas and concepts of management into real management? What theories and concepts of management are applied (if applied) by managers in everyday life?

These and many other problems stated below will be the subject of discussion at the VIII Conference on History of Management Thought and Business, that will take place on 27-29 June, 2005 at Economic Faculty of Moscow State University after M.V. Lomonosov.

These and other questions are to be discussed at the forthcoming conference.
